The Erzgebirge, that is literally Ore Mountain, region is located in the eastern part of Germany along the Czech border, not far away from the cities of Dresden and Leipzig. Originally, it was famous because of the many silver mines. Later the miners turned to toy making for a living. Over the centuries they developed extraordinary wood carving skills that were inherited from generation to generation. Amongst many others Christmas pyramides, angel candle holders and nutcracker were created in the Erzgebirge in the last century and became famous all over Europe.
